5 Best Summer Movies For Kids

My kids and I love having “PJ Movie Day” during the summer. We pick one day a week where we stay in our jammies all day and have movie marathons. Each week, we pick a different theme: superheroes, musicals, Christmas in July, etc.

One of my favorite themes is “summer movies”. There are so many great classic films about summer, but these are a few of our favorite summer movies for kids. (I may need to make another list of my not-so-family-friendly summer movie favorites because there are so many great ones. I’m looking at you,  Wet Hot American Summer and Jaws.)

1. Gidget:

Gidget is cute and campy, but still has a great message: girls can do anything boys can do. Bonus points for mom: Moondoggie.

2. Parent Trap:

The original. We never talk about that remake. Parent Trap is another must-watch classic summer movie. Catchy songs, adorable hijinx. What’s not to love?

3. The Sandlot:

I admit that my kids haven’t seen The Sandlot yet, but it’s on our list for our next summer movie night. There’s some bad language in this one, but it’s not a huge deal.

4. Camp Rock:

Ok, so it’s not a classic movie, but it’s a ton of fun, much like you’d expect a Disney movie to be. And look how itty bitty the Jonas Brothers look. Awwww.

5. Teen Beach Movie 2:

Yes, Teen Beach Movie 2. My daughter and I both agree it’s the better of the two Teen Beach Movies. I let her stay “up late” the night it premiered on Disney Channel and she’s been watching it non-stop since we received the review copy in the mail. I have to admit, the songs are super catchy and the story is fun. And while I did receive the copy of the movie for free to review, we would have put it on this list anyway. I want to be able to show my kids Beach Party (60’s movie starring Annette Funicello), but the themes are still a little too mature for their little selves. Teen Beach Movie 2 gets them a little kick of that 60’s kitsch with the Disney Channel stars they know and love. We give it two very big thumbs up. It’s available for purchase now and also available OnDemand on the Watch Disney Channel app (cable provider login required.)
